A different kind of moving day

Most moves are a logistics problem. This one isn't, quite. Someone is leaving a house they've been in a long time — usually for somewhere smaller, sometimes on a timeline set by health rather than choice — and the furniture is the easy part. The pace, the patience, and who gets told what are what actually matter, and we staff these moves knowing it.

So the walk-through takes longer. Questions get asked twice if that's what's needed. And nothing leaves the house that someone hasn't agreed can leave.

A valley full of people who've done this before

Columbus has an unusual share of retirees who spent a career in the Army and either never left or came back — for the hospital, the commissary, and a community of people who understand the life. If that's you, here's the honest part: you have moved more times than we have.

We take that as a good thing. You know what a competent crew looks like and you'll spot a shortcut before we finish taking it. You also probably know what you want from a walk-through, so tell us and we'll work your way. Nobody here is going to explain moving to someone who did twelve PCS moves.

From the big house to something manageable

A lot of these moves run the same direction: out of a place in North Columbus, Midland, or Harris County with acreage and a long driveway, into somewhere single-level and closer in. Sometimes closer to the medical district, sometimes closer to a daughter, sometimes just closer to a grocery store that isn't twenty minutes away.

Those old properties tend to hold more than anyone remembers — a workshop, a shed, thirty years of a garage. That's a bigger job than the house itself and worth accounting for up front rather than discovering on move day.

The children who live somewhere else

Usually the person arranging this doesn't live in Columbus — and in a town where families moved every few years, the grown children are genuinely scattered. You could be in Texas or Washington or overseas, coordinating by phone between work and everything else, and the hardest part is not being able to see what's happening.

So we work the way that helps: one point of contact who knows the move, photos when a decision needs making, a call after the walk-through so you hear the plan in plain terms, and nothing donated or thrown out without a sign-off from whoever you've told us is deciding. You should be able to be a time zone away and still know exactly where things stand.

Downsizing, one pile at a time

We're not estate appraisers and won't pretend to be, but we will stage the house into keep, family, donate, and haul off — then move each pile where it belongs, which is the part that usually stalls for months.

  • The keep load — packed, padded, and placed in the new home, not stacked in the middle of the room
  • Family pieces — the table going to a son in another state can ride along or ship separately; see long-distance moving
  • Donations — run to real Columbus places, below
  • The rest — hauled off, so the house ends up actually empty rather than almost empty

Where the donations go

Furniture that's still good shouldn't end up at the curb. Donated pieces go to stops like Goodwill Industries of the Southern Rivers, headquartered right here in Columbus and serving counties across west Georgia and east Alabama, and the Valley Rescue Mission, whose Bargain Centers take furniture, household goods, tools, and antiques and fund its work with people in the valley.

We'll make the run as part of the move and get you the receipts — Goodwill Southern Rivers can also track and reprint donation receipts online, which is worth knowing at tax time when the paper one has long since disappeared.

Retirement communities have rules

Independent living, assisted living, and continuing-care communities around Columbus and across the river each run move-ins on their own terms — a reserved elevator, a move-in window on a particular afternoon, corridor and doorframe protection, and paperwork from the mover before anyone's allowed up.

Tell us where you're headed and we'll sort it out with the community's move-in office directly. It's a call we've made many times, and it's the difference between a smooth arrival and standing in a lobby being told today isn't a move-in day.

If the move crosses the river

Plenty of these end up in Phenix City or Smiths Station, which puts the new address in Alabama. For the move itself that changes nothing — it's priced like any local move, and it's usually a short day. See local moving in Columbus.

The first night is the whole point

The measure of a senior move isn't whether the truck got emptied. It's whether the first evening in the new place feels like somewhere to live. So before we leave, the bed is together and made up if you want it, the lamp and the TV work, the coffee maker is out on the counter, and the chair is where it should be rather than in a box marked "living room."

Boxes can be unpacked the same day or on a settle-in visit a few days later, once it's clearer where things actually want to go.

Go at the right speed

Most of these work better as three shorter days than one long one: a pack day, a move day, and a settle-in visit. It costs the same because it's the same work — it's just far easier on everybody. And in a Columbus July we start early and pace it properly, which matters more here than almost anywhere.

What it costs

The same honest hourly structure as any local move — no "senior package," no premium for patience — with 5% off the labor. The military discount is the same 5%, so if you're a veteran just mention whichever applies when you book and we'll make sure it's on there.

The straight numbers: what Columbus moves actually run

What moves typically add up to, by size. Your quote is always for your specific move; this is what honesty about the ballpark looks like.

Move typeTypical timeTypical costCrew
Studio / 1-bedroom2.9 – 3.6 hrs$660 – $7852 movers
2-bedroom home or apartment2.9 – 4.2 hrs$660 – $8702–3 movers
3-bedroom home5.0 – 7.6 hrs$1,135 – $1,7052–3 movers
4+ bedroom home5.6 – 8.3 hrs$1,340 – $2,0353–5 movers
Small office4.7 – 6.1 hrs$975 – $1,2002–3 movers
Storage unit move3.7 – 4.8 hrs$800 – $9902–3 movers

Typical ranges for T&T moves. Every home is different — stairs, distance, and packing help move the number, and you get your price in writing before move day.

The 5% discount comes off the labor on top of these ranges. Downsizing usually lands below the size of the old house, since a good share of it isn't making the trip.

5% off the labor, on the same hourly structure as any local move. The military discount is the same 5% — mention whichever applies to you.

That's how most of these are arranged. One point of contact, photos when a decision is needed, and nothing donated or discarded without a sign-off.

Yes, and it usually should — pack day, move day, settle-in visit. Same work, same cost, much easier on everyone.

What about what doesn't fit?
