A post that runs on class dates, not just orders
Most Army towns move on one rhythm: the summer PCS wave. Columbus moves on two. Fort Benning is a school-house post — the Infantry School, the Armor School, Airborne, Ranger School, OCS — which means alongside the families rotating in and out on three-year cycles, there's a constant turn of soldiers and families here for a course that lasts weeks or months.
That changes what a move looks like. Not every household here is a full PCS with a moving budget and ninety days of notice. Some are a short-stay apartment, some are a storage unit between courses, and a lot are timed to a graduation date that was set long before anyone found a house. We schedule around all of it, because it's most of what we do.
When you're in a course and can't be reached
This is the one we get asked about most, and the answer is yes. Between Ranger School, Airborne, and the long infantry and armor courses, a good share of Benning moves happen while the soldier is out of contact for weeks at a stretch — and the spouse is running the whole thing, often with kids and often from out of state.
So we're set up for it. We'll quote by phone, work from photos or a video walkthrough, take direction from whoever you tell us is making decisions, and keep one point of contact who actually knows your move rather than whoever picks up. You should be able to hand this off and think about something else.
The post is in two states
Fort Benning spans more than 182,000 acres across Muscogee and Chattahoochee counties in Georgia and into Russell County, Alabama. Two practical consequences. First, on-post to on-post is a real move, not a golf-cart trip — the drive between housing areas can be longer than a cross-town move in most cities. Second, plenty of Benning families live across the river in Phenix City or Smiths Station, so a good number of these moves cross a state line and are still, in every way that matters to you, local. The moves we do most
- On post to off post — leaving housing for a place in Columbus, Midland, Upatoi, or across in Phenix City
- Off post to on post — the same trip in reverse, usually on a tighter clock
- On post to on post — a housing-area change, which on a post this size is a full day's work
- PCS out of the valley — one crew, door to door, anywhere in the lower 48 (see long-distance moving)
- Storage between courses — the apartment emptied while you're in a school, and back out when you have an address again
Short notice is normal here
Orders move. Report dates change. A course slot opens and the family has three weeks. We plan for that rather than acting surprised by it, so when you call with a date that sounds impossible, you get a straight answer about what's actually available that day instead of a maybe and a callback that never comes.
Worth knowing about summer: May through August is when Benning rotates a large share of its families, and that absorbs most of the moving capacity in the valley. If your date falls in those months, three weeks' notice is the difference between the date you want and the date that's left.
Personally procured moves (PPM/DITY)

One honest note: your transportation office sets the rules and they do change. Confirm the current requirements with them before move day — better to hear that from us now than to find a missing document at claim time.
Gate access
Moving on post means our crew clears the gate, and we'd rather sort that out in advance than at 8am with a loaded truck idling at the visitor center. Tell us the housing area when you book and we'll handle the coordination.
